Keeping you safe during your graduation

We can’t wait to celebrate your graduation with you very soon. The University of East London takes the safety of our graduands and their guests very seriously, so we letting you know what COVID-19 safety procedures we have in place. This is to keep you and those around you safe.

Before the ceremony

You must have a negative Covid test to attend graduation. Anyone unable to provide proof will be denied admission. In order to keep our community safe, you must have a negative Covid test regardless of your vaccination status. If you take a Covid-19 test and the result is positive, you will be able to defer to the winter graduation so you can still celebrate your day.

How to get a test

  1. Obtain a lateral flow test online, from a chemist or designated testing centre.
  2. Take your test at least 24 hours before your graduation ceremony.
  3. Follow the instructions provided with the test. There are also ‘how to’ videos online.
  4. Report your result online to NHS.
  5. Confirmation of your result will be sent to your mobile phone. Show this when you arrive at your graduation ceremony.
  6. If you do test positive, please follow NHS advice and contact graduation@uel.ac.uk to confirm you are unable to attend.

All attendees will be required to wear a facial covering inside the venue, unless you are exempt. Graduates are able to remove their facial covering whilst they cross the stage and then are asked to put their facial covering back on once you leave the stage.

During the ceremony
All attendees will be allocated a seat. Please ensure you sit in your allocated seat and wear your facial covering for the duration of the ceremony.

Graduates are able to remove their facial covering whilst they cross the stage but please remember to put it back on once you leave the stage.

Whilst crossing the stage, there will be a red carpet which is placed 1m away from our Chancellor. When you cross the stage, please walk on the red carpet. Normal protocol is to shake hands with the Chancellor however, given these unprecedented times, graduates will drop their hat when they pass the Chancellor.

After the ceremony
Graduates and their guests will be asked to leave the ceremony venue. Please arrange to meet up outside the graduation ceremony. There will be food stalls, music, activities and the chance to meet with our alumni team at our stunning Docklands campus. You will be able to take photos along the docks to get that perfect Instagram shot or TikTok dance.

Finally, we hope you enjoy your day. You’ve worked hard for this. There will be plenty of staff on hand during the day if you’re unsure of where you need to be or what you need to do, just ask and we will be more than happy to help you.

If you have any queries before the day, please contact graduation@uel.ac.uk.
