Islamophobia Statement
The University recognises the working definition of Islamophobia developed by the All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims based on the guidance provided by the Coalition Against Islamophobia.
The definition outlines that “Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.”
This definition conceptualises Islamophobia as a type of racism and recognises that Muslims are subject to more than just overt expressions of religious hatred and abuse, but a systemic form of discrimination, control, and exclusion that is manifested in public, economic, political and social spheres of life.
The recognition of this definition is not intended to curtail freedom of speech and academic freedom but is part of wider efforts towards anti-hate and anti racism that promotes a culture of inclusivity.
The University will use the guidelines developed by the Coalition Against Islamophobia and the guidance from the Universities UK on Tackling Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred as a framework to support the implementation of the all Party Parliamentary Group definition.

Tackling Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred: Practical guidance for UK universities
The implementation of this framework will develop examples of Islamophobia in public life, the media, schools, the workplace, and in encounters between religions and non-religions in the public sphere. These will be published in due course.
