Why did you choose to study at UEL?
I chose to study BEng Civil Engineering at UEL as the university's key focus on employability and real-world learning that UEL has stood out to me, as I wanted to gain skills that I could apply directly to my future career.
What is your one special memory of your time at UEL?
My special memories whilst studying at UEL include working on a group project with students from diverse backgrounds. Through collaborating, learning from each other, and celebrating our success, we created lasting friendships and also shaped my personal growth.
What have you done since graduating from UEL?
Since graduating from UEL in 2016, I have gained over 7 years’ experience within the civil engineering industry, including managing projects Zambian mining industry, leading infrastructure works, and applying project management skills to improve asset strategies and designs.
What is your current job role? And what does it involve?
My current role at ‘Kansanshi Copper Mines’ involves managing civil projects, overseeing maintenance works, preparing scopes of work, coordinating contractors, and ensuring safety and quality control.
How did UEL help you get to where you are now?
UEL equipped me with technical skills, real-world experience and a strong professional network, which has helped me excel in my civil engineering career.
What advice would you give your younger self?
I would advise my younger self to embrace every learning opportunity, be proactive in building a network, and not fear failure, as it's part of the growth process.
What advice would you give to UEL current students preparing to graduate?
Focus on gaining practical experience, network actively, and stay adaptable. Don't be afraid to take on challenges, and always keep learning, as growth happens beyond the classroom.
Tell us something about yourself that most people don't know
Most people don't know that I have a deep interest in sustainable construction practices and regularly explore new methods to reduce environmental impact in civil engineering projects.
If you were to do it all again, would you still choose UEL?
Yes, I would still choose UEL all over again! The combination of academic rigour, practical learning opportunities, and a diverse, supportive environment made it the ideal place to grow.
