Halima Kure, PhD in Cybersecurity Risk Management, 2021
Why did you choose to study at UEL?
I chose to study Cybersecurity Risk Management at UEL for its innovation-focused programmes, supportive environment, and diversity. Completing my BSc, MSc, and PhD at UEL allowed me to grow academically and professionally within my field.
What is your one special memory of your time at UEL?
My special memory at UEL was presenting my research findings during a university seminar, where I received an award and invaluable feedback. It was a proud moment that boosted my confidence and passion for cybersecurity.
What have you done since graduating from UEL?
Since graduating from UEL, I have built a dynamic career within the field of cybersecurity, combining both academia and industry. I have developed an innovative risk assessment tool and mentored aspiring professionals through teaching and consultancy.
What is your current job role? And what does it involve?
I am a senior lecturer in cybersecurity, focusing on teaching, research, and mentoring students. My role involves developing courses, conducting research and collaborating with industry professionals.
How did UEL help you get to where you are now?
UEL provided me with the knowledge and skills to excel within my chosen field. The hands-on learning, supportive faculty, and diverse environment shaped my confidence and prepared me for leadership in academia and industry.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Trust yourself and embrace the journey. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and the skills you are developing today will open doors you never imagined. Stay curious, stay learning.
What advice would you give to UEL current students preparing to graduate?
Build your network, as it will be a valuable resource. Most importantly, do not fear rejection; it is part of the growth process. Your UEL experience has prepared you well, and trust in your abilities.
Tell us something about yourself that most people don't know
I enjoy solving puzzles and challenges, which is one of the reasons I was drawn to cybersecurity. The thrill of finding solutions and overcoming obstacles keeps me motivated every day.
If you were to do it all again, would you still choose UEL?
Absolutely, I would choose UEL again without hesitation. The supportive environment, diversity, and opportunities for academic and personal growth shaped my journey and prepared me for success.
