2024 October Alumni of the month
Omar Shobair graduated in 2023 with an MSc in Civil Engineering.
Why did you choose to study at UEL?
I chose to study at the University of East London because of its strong engineering ethos and its roots as a former polytechnic, which emphasise applied learning, industry relevance, and professional development. I was particularly drawn to UEL’s approach to civil and structural engineering, where theoretical understanding is closely integrated with practical application. In addition, the Docklands Campus provided an inspiring environment that further reinforced my decision to begin and continue my academic journey at UEL.
What is your one special memory of your time at UEL?
One of my most memorable experiences at UEL was taking part in the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Design Challenges in 2020 and 2021. Despite facing financial and personal challenges, I led my team to the National Finals in consecutive years, where we achieved top 3.6% and top 2.6% rankings across the UK and Ireland. These experiences were pivotal in shaping my leadership, resilience, and problem-solving skills, and remain some of the proudest moments of my academic journey.
What have you done since graduating from UEL?
Since graduating from UEL, I have continued to build on my academic and professional development. I was awarded second place (Silver) in the EON-XR Augmented and Virtual Reality Competition within the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering, where my project explored the benefits of using immersive technologies within structural engineering practice. I have also remained actively involved in engineering outreach, research, and professional engagement activities, continuing the momentum established during my studies at UEL.
What is your current job role? And what does it involve?
I am currently working as a structural engineer at Whitby Wood Ltd, where my role involves supporting the design, analysis, and coordination of structural systems across a range of multidisciplinary projects. This includes contributing to technical calculations, modelling, and collaborative design development within professional engineering teams.
Alongside my professional role, I am pursuing a PhD. Through this, I remain actively engaged in research, teaching-related initiatives, and student-focused activities, allowing me to combine technical engineering practice with educational leadership, communication, and mentoring.
How did UEL help you get to where you are now?
UEL played a fundamental role in my academic and professional development. The dedication and support of the senior lecturing team - particularly Dr Jawed Qureshi, Dr Ali Abbas, and Dr Arya Assadi Langroudi - were instrumental in helping me develop a strong technical foundation in civil and structural engineering. Their teaching, guidance, and encouragement enabled me to strengthen my analytical thinking, confidence, and academic discipline, all of which have been essential in my progression beyond graduation.
What advice would you give your younger self?
I would remind my younger self that life presents many challenges, but each obstacle carries an opportunity for growth. Regardless of educational, financial, or social difficulties, perseverance and self-belief are essential. By remaining focused, disciplined, and committed to long-term goals, it is possible to transform adversity into achievement and continuously strive to become the best version of oneself.
What advice would you give to UEL current students preparing to graduate?
I would encourage current students to value the guidance of their lecturers and to engage fully with their learning. The knowledge gained through lectures, projects, and laboratory work often proves invaluable later on, both academically and professionally. Most importantly, remain patient and resilient - growth does not always happen immediately, but with persistence, effort, and faith, progress will follow. Always remember that ‘Indeed, with hardship comes ease’.
Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know:
Outside of academia and engineering, I am passionate about basketball, which has taught me discipline, teamwork, and resilience. I believe personal development extends beyond professional success. It is about continuously striving for self-improvement, balance, and excellence in all aspects of life.
If you were to do it all again, would you still choose UEL?
Without hesitation, I would choose UEL again. From receiving my unconditional offer, to learning in state-of-the-art laboratories, and ultimately graduating, my time at UEL was both challenging and deeply rewarding. The university provided me with the foundation, confidence, and opportunities that have shaped my academic achievements and professional journey.
