2024 February Alumni of the month
Why did you choose to study at UEL?
I chose to study at UEL because my dreams were to explore and develop my skills as a writer and experience a new life. UEL appealed to me as I came from a small town in rural Norfolk, which is different to the busy atmosphere in London.
What is your one special memory of your time at UEL?
My special memory was when I was awarded the ‘Best Overall Course Representative’ at the March 2020 UEL Awards Ceremony. I felt that my hard work and compassion for my peers and course were recognised and I was honoured to receive the award.
What have you done since graduating from UEL?
Since graduating in 2022 from the course Games Design: Story Development, I completed an MA in Creative Writing after moving to Manchester. I managed to pass with flying colours, despite being pregnant throughout my studies. My son is my proudest achievement to date.
What is your current job role? And what does it involve?
I am currently applying for teacher training to become a qualified Secondary School English teacher. My current job role is to be the best mother and wife to my son and husband.
How did UEL help you get to where you are now?
UEL gave me opportunities to develop my leadership, management and mental wellbeing skills. I am confident, happy, and able to fulfil my passions, which I believe is another form of success, besides your chosen career.
What advice would you give your younger self?
I would tell my younger self not to worry solely about climbing the career ladder, as you can only try your best. Failure is part of the journey, and success looks different for everyone. Live in the present and appreciate the people you have around you that bring you true happiness.
What advice would you give to UEL current students preparing to graduate?
I would advise current students to keep looking to the future and be open to exploring new opportunities, even if they seem daunting at first. Get out of your comfort zone as that is the key to continuous growth.
Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know:
My father was a conservationist. He backpacked through Africa and India, fighting to protect animals and wildlife. His love for the natural world drives my ambition. I'm proud to be his daughter.
If you were to do it all again, would you still choose UEL?
I have confidence in the choices I have made. UEL is a fundamental part of who I am, so yes, I would always choose UEL again.
