OVERVIEW
Tanya has an extensive background in education both from a practical and academic perspective. After gaining her BEd (Hons) she entered primary education where she taught across the early years and primary phases. Tanya lead the teaching of subjects such as PE and Science supporting the development of the curriculum and effective assessment tools. As her career progressed she became a SENCo and part of the senior leadership team. Tanya worked closely with children, families, school staff and outside agencies and professionals to enhance the outcomes of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.
As a specialist teacher, Tanya then achieved an MSc in speech, language and communication and an MEd in Autism. With these qualifications and the developing role, she was able to support schools by working strategically to develop their understanding and expertise within SEND. Supporting the development of relationships between supporting agencies and families and enhancing successful transition processes. Tanya offered bespoke training and also acted as an AET trainer and an ELKLAN trainer. As a part of this role, she worked with Eastern Partnership to teach on their NASENCo award and as an assessor on the CERTSEY award.
Tanya has worked with UEL for over five years now and as a full-time member of staff since 2019 and became a Fellow for Higher Education in 2021. She is now a Senior Fellow, and course leader for the MA SEN, PG Cert in Understanding and Supporting Behaviour and the PG Cert in Autism Spectrum Conditions and Learning. Tanya teaches across the modules for this course as well as on the undergraduate course with the Early Childhood, Education and Special Educational Needs teams.
CURRENT RESEARCH
I currently work towards a PhD exploring the views of students who identify as having a SEND who are studying at Level 7. I am working across a number of institutions exploring how Academic advisors could have a positive impact on closing the award gap. I am beginning to develop work, alongside other colleagues and researchers with specialist provisions and exploring an international perspective on SEND.
