Dr Renata Brandão is a co-course leader and senior lecturer in Multimedia Journalism in the School of Arts and Creative Industries at the University of East London. Her research focuses on the uses and representation of data across media outlets.

OVERVIEW
Dr Renata Brandao is the co-course leader and senior lecturer in Multimedia Journalism. Renata brings a wealth of expertise to her role and is committed to advancing journalism research and education. As a co-course leader, she is responsible for developing and enhancing journalism curricula, diligently creating and sustaining a welcoming academic environment for faculty and students.
Renata has accumulated progressive experience over the years, encompassing various aspects of data research and its transformative role in journalism. She has a PhD in Journalism from the University of Sheffield examining how statistics shape news discourses. Following the successful defence of her thesis, Renata advanced her academic journey by assuming the role of a Post-Doctoral Researcher at King's College London. In this role, she contributed to the Digital Mediations strand within the Language Acts and Worldmaking project, exploring the impact of digital practices on modern language research.
CURRENT RESEARCH
Renata's research underscores data's potential to enhance and expand journalism research and education in meaningful, creative and accessible ways. She has demonstrated expertise in media research methods and consistently showcased her proficiency in digital research methods. Renata co-led the ‘Worldmaking in the Time of Covid-19' project, examining journalistic narratives related to the Covid-19 pandemic in 12 languages. Her recent contributions include published works on digital humanities, advanced critical literacies in modern languages and cultures, and an exploration of activism in the classroom.
