Dr Micallef graduated from the University of Malta in 2006 with a hybrid degree in architecture and engineering. He began his career in Malta before completing a Master of Science in earthquake engineering at Imperial College London.

He later earned a Doctor of Philosophy, where his research investigated the dynamic response of blast-loaded plated structures.

OVERVIEW

Karl worked at Foster + Partners from 2013 to 2015, contributing to projects including the Maggie’s Centre in Manchester.

He then joined Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, where he worked from 2015 to 2025. During this time, he helped deliver major projects including Karlatornet in Gothenburg, Thames City in London, Octagon in Birmingham and the new United Nations building in Geneva.

Karl is now an Associate Principal Structural Engineer at DeSimone Consulting Engineering in London.

He has been a Visiting Lecturer at the University of East London (UEL) since 2015, supporting students who have gone on to win national concrete design competitions. In 2023, the Royal Academy of Engineering awarded him a Visiting Professor position at UEL. Karl is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
