OVERVIEW
Dr Karina Corada-Pérez is an environmental chemist and Research Fellow at the Sustainability Research Institute, University of East London.
Her research focuses on the intersection of air quality, urban green and blue infrastructure, and public health, exploring how vegetation, such as hedges, wetlands, street trees, green walls and roofs and domestic gardens, can reduce exposure to air pollution and improve urban resilience. Her research investigates the mechanisms through which vegetation influences urban air composition, pollutant dispersion, and microclimate regulation. By combining field measurements, air quality monitoring, and environmental modelling, she examines how small-scale green spaces can contribute to reducing air pollution levels, while also enhancing urban comfort and resilience.
A central theme of her work is environmental health equity. She studies how pollution disproportionately affects vulnerable groups, such as children and residents in high-traffic or low-income neighbourhoods and develops strategies that make clean air interventions more accessible and context-specific. Dr Corada-Pérez is also dedicated to translating scientific evidence into practical action. She collaborates with schools, local councils, and community organisations to turn research findings into actionable guidance that supports healthier urban air quality and environments. Her work integrates social, environmental, and design dimensions to inform policy and promote the use of vegetation as an effective, evidence-based air pollution mitigation tool.
