CURRENT RESEARCH
Dr Andrew Arewa has extensive research experience in construction project management, and health and safety in the construction and infrastructure sector.
Andrew has secured consultancy and research incomes worth approx. £1.8M (including the UK Department for Business, Innovations and Skills grant for promoting health and safety among SMEs in the UK). He has published over 61 refereed papers. This includes 21 high-impact international journal publications, on health and safety at work; safety performance of SMEs, process safety, human factors analysis classification system, sustainable construction, project management and project planning. He is one of the few leading authors on health and safety management techniques, performance and evidence-based communications systems in the construction industry and the development of business ethics models for organisations. His publications have attracted over 503 SCI citations with H index 12, i-10 index 14 in Google Scholar. He has 10,088 reads and 1148 citations in ResearchGate.
His international reputation is also reflected by membership of advisory committees of five international conferences, editorial member/guest editor of two journals (including Safety at Work Journal; Journal of Construction Economics and Building and Journal of Safety Science), three keynote/plenary lectures on conferences, referee for journals, and external examiner for three PhDs worldwide.
He is passionate about research that focuses on:
- Sustainable construction. (Specific emphasis on energy efficiency in buildings, building performance optimisation, low-energy and smart buildings).
- Health and safety. (Investigating areas such as engineering systems safety (ESS), process safety, safety performance management (SPM), and human factor analysis).
- Construction project management. (Emphasis on building information modelling, building cost information management, and the impact of emerging technologies and commercial practices in the construction industry).
In conjunction with Siemens UK, I am investigating and developing a "Reconfigurable Hybrid Smart Sensors for Monitoring Critical Deterioration in Infrastructures". I am the principal investigator for this research project. The research is partly sponsored by the UK India Education Research Initiative (UKIERI). The research aims to design and develop reconfigurable hybrid smart sensors for monitoring critical deterioration in infrastructures. It will investigate the impact of infrastructure deterioration on end-users' safety. The proposed smart sensor will provide efficient, cost-effective and smart techniques used to check the deterioration, and potency of building and civil infrastructures. The key measurable objectives of the research project are:
- To investigate present and future interdependencies of deterioration in infrastructure (buildings and civil engineering assets) and to predict the safety of end-users.
- To design, model and simulate reconfigurable hybrid smart electro-optical sensors that will actively measure the rate of deterioration in civil infrastructure.
- To design a measurement algorithm, a flow chart that provides integrated real-time data of dysfunctional critical deterioration of various infrastructure and the safety of end-users.
