University league tables often reward where students start. The University of East London is being recognised for how far they travel.
UEL has been ranked number one in the UK for value added in the Guardian University Guide 2027, achieving a sector-leading score that no other university matched.
The Guardian’s value-added measure assesses how effectively a university enables students to outperform expectations based on their entry qualifications. UEL’s national number-one position therefore captures something conventional rankings can miss: the progress students make and the value their university creates.
UEL also remains among the UK’s top 40 universities, ranking 37th out of 123 institutions – following last year’s highest climb of any UK university and UEL’s confirmed place as London’s highest-ranked modern university.
The results underline a sustained institutional transformation, simultaneously strengthening student satisfaction, academic achievement, and graduate career prospects.
Professor Amanda J Broderick, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of East London, said:
Entry grades tell us something about where a student has been. Value added tells us how far their university helps them go.
Being ranked number one in the country is powerful recognition of what the University of East London exists to do: unlock potential, accelerate achievement and ensure that talent - not background - determines what comes next.
This result matters because social inclusion without successful outcomes is not enough. Opening the door to higher education must be matched by an absolute commitment to help every student thrive once they walk through it.
Our students bring ambition, resilience and extraordinary potential. Our responsibility is to match that ambition with excellent teaching, meaningful professional experience and the networks, confidence and capabilities they need to succeed. That is the promise of our careers-first approach - and these results show that it is delivering.”
From academic potential to career momentum
UEL’s progress extends well beyond its overall position.
The University has climbed 42 places in a single year for career prospects, entering the UK top 50 and ranking first among London modern universities. Since 2025, UEL has risen 63 places on this measure.
The improvement reflects UEL’s sustained progress in graduate outcomes and its whole-university careers-first model. Through the UEL Careers Guarantee, professional experience, employer engagement and career development are embedded throughout the student journey rather than offered as optional extras at its end.
Professor Broderick continued:
Higher education should do more than recognise existing advantage. It should create new advantage.
Our Careers Guarantee connects learning to opportunity from day one. Students build professional experience, relationships with employers and evidence of their capabilities while completing their degrees.
The result is not simply stronger academic performance. It is greater agency: graduates equipped to shape their careers, create businesses and contribute to a fast-changing economy.”
A pattern, not a one-off
The Guardian 2027 ranking results add to a series of national indicators charting UEL’s accelerating performance:
- Number one in England for graduating students’ overall positivity in the National Student Survey 2026, using the Times Higher Education methodology for institutions with more than 1,000 responses
- University of the Year for Student Support 2027 in the Daily Mail University Guide, alongside the UK's largest 51-place rise
- Fastest-rising university in England for graduate employability
- A 30-place rise in the Complete University Guide 2027, with the highest student satisfaction score in London
- Shortlisted for three Times Higher Education Awards 2026: Technological or Digital Innovation of the Year, Business School of the Year, and Research Project of the Year
Professor Broderick concluded:
This is not a one-year rise or a single-table success. Across independent measures, the direction is clear. UEL is demonstrating that social inclusion and high performance are not competing ambitions. When a university is deliberately designed around student success, each reinforces the other. We are proud of how far our community has travelled - but even more ambitious about where we go next.”
