When people think about sustainability, they often picture renewable energy, circular economies or greener infrastructure. Rarely do they think about emotional resilience, preventative wellbeing or community connection.
Yet, for Mile Rainbow CIC, sustainability begins with people.
Now part of the TerraDock ecosystem at the Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability, Mile Rainbow CIC is helping reshape conversations around what a sustainable future truly looks like, one where wellbeing, prevention and human connection are recognised as essential foundations for resilient communities.
The organisation’s work is grounded in a simple but increasingly urgent belief: healthier communities are created when people are supported before they reach crisis point, not after.
Mile Rainbow CIC was founded by preventive medicine specialist Hong Zhou after years of seeing people fall into the gap between “coping” and crisis.

While many systems focus on intervention once challenges escalate, the organisation was created to prioritise prevention, helping individuals strengthen emotional resilience, confidence and social connection before stress develops into long-term mental or physical health difficulties.
For Hong, sustainability extends far beyond environmental action alone.
Hong Zhou, Founder of Mile Rainbow CIC, said:
A truly sustainable society must prevent burnout, reduce health inequalities, strengthen social connection and support people before they reach crisis point.”
That philosophy now sits at the heart of the organisation’s work across communities, workplaces and educational settings.
Mile Rainbow CIC’s approach reflects a broader understanding of sustainability, one that connects emotional wellbeing, public health and long-term community resilience.
Burnout, isolation and poor mental wellbeing do not exist in isolation. Their impact reaches workplaces, healthcare systems, education and local communities alike. By focusing on early intervention and preventative support, the organisation aims to reduce pressure downstream while helping people feel more connected, confident and able to participate fully in society.
Through workshops, wellbeing programmes and community-led activities, Mile Rainbow CIC creates accessible spaces where emotional resilience and social connection can be built in practical, meaningful ways. Participants have included residents, students, professionals and community groups, many of whom may not otherwise engage with traditional wellbeing support services.
Mile Rainbow CIC first connected with RDCS through an MDSUK event hosted at the centre, where conversations around wellbeing, inclusion and community resilience revealed strong shared values.
What began as smaller wellbeing sessions and community activities within RDCS gradually developed into a wider partnership with the University of East London. Through UEL’s Learning and Development initiatives, the organisation later delivered sessions with both the Royal Docks School of Business and Law and the Department of Nursing and Midwifery during 2025.
Since then, Mile Rainbow CIC has contributed to a growing range of cultural and community activities across RDCS, including the Creative Industries Festival and the Newham Festival of Stories, helping bring conversations around emotional resilience and preventative wellbeing into more public and inclusive spaces.
The organisation also received the Health and Wellbeing Enterprise Award from UEL’s Royal Docks School of Business and Law, further strengthening its connection to the TerraDock ecosystem and the university’s wider innovation community.
For Hong, joining TerraDock was about far more than just a physical workspace alone.
Hong added:
Being part of TerraDock creates opportunities to meet like-minded entrepreneurs, explore collaborations, engage with UEL students and staff, and contribute to wider conversations about sustainability, enterprise and wellbeing.”
This work also strongly reflects the ambitions of UEL’s Vision 2028 strategy, which places inclusive innovation, community empowerment and long-term sustainability at the centre of the university’s future. By supporting organisations like Mile Rainbow CIC, UEL continues to demonstrate how sustainability must include not only environmental progress, but also healthier, more resilient communities where people are empowered to thrive.
Since 2022, Mile Rainbow CIC has reached more than 4,400 participants across London through its prevention-focused wellbeing programmes.
The organisation reports that approximately 90% of participants experienced improvements in wellbeing and confidence after engaging with its sessions. Its work has also led to collaborations across higher education, local government, community organisations and health and wellbeing networks.
Alongside programme delivery, Mile Rainbow CIC has received recognition for its work in health innovation, social enterprise and inclusive wellbeing practice.
As the organisation continues to grow, it plans to expand its Emotional Vaccine model through:
- Workplace wellbeing programmes
- University partnerships
- Preventative community health initiatives
- Digital learning and accessible wellbeing resources
The organisation is also looking to deepen collaboration across the RDCS and TerraDock ecosystems, particularly around community engagement, sustainability and preventative approaches to health and wellbeing.
In many ways, Mile Rainbow CIC reflects the wider story of the Royal Docks itself - a place shaped by regeneration, resilience and long-term renewal.
Its work is an important reminder that sustainable futures are not built through infrastructure alone. They are built through healthier people, stronger support systems and communities where individuals can thrive in the long term.
Some of the most meaningful sustainability outcomes are often the least visible: the crisis that never happened, the burnout that was prevented, or the connection that ensured someone was not left behind.
These are not soft outcomes. They are part of the foundation upon which sustainable futures depend on.
