The University of East London has risen 23 places in this year’s prestigious Guardian University Guide league table to enter the elite top 40 of UK institutions for the first time in its history, capping a remarkable three years in which UEL has improved by 80 places. It is now among the top six universities in London, with its journey described by the Guardian as a “meteoric ascent”.
The University ranked in the top 30 nationally in three metrics, including a top-three finish in Value-Added, which measures students’ ability to achieve good honours based on entry qualifications. Other strong results were Satisfied with Assessment (13th) and Satisfied with Teaching (29th).
Professor Amanda Broderick, Vice Chancellor and President, said,
I am so proud to see the University of East London enter the top 40 in the Guardian University Guide 2026 league table, marking an incredible rise of 80 places over just three years.
This achievement reflects the dedication of our staff and students and the strength of our mission to transform lives by delivering the best careers-focused education in the country. Our position in the Guardian league table is a recognition of academic excellence, but it is also a testament to the hard work we have done over the last five years and our commitment to innovation, inclusivity and impact, all of which have resulted in a radically transformed institution.”
It is a difficult time for the UK higher education sector, but UEL continues to flexibly adapt to meet the evolving needs of our students and a rapidly changing society.
We are solidifying our financial health, improving social mobility and tackling health and economic inequalities. We are also contributing to a more sustainable world through initiatives such as creating net-zero carbon campuses by 2030. Our University’s success is because of the effort of our students, staff, alumni, employer partners, community partners, and so many more who have chosen to join us on this tremendous journey of transformation.”
The Guardian result follows UEL’s shortlisting on 4 September for University of the Year and Business School of the Year (Royal Docks School of Business and Law) by the Times Higher Education Awards, considered by many to be the most prestigious recognition in UK higher education.
UEL listed as a “Mover and Shaker” by the Guardian
The Guardian ranks universities through eight different scores, which form a total out of 100 points. These include what students say about their teaching and feedback in the annual National Student Survey, the staff-to-student ratio, whether academic performance improves at university and the number of students in graduate jobs within 15 months of graduation.
The Guardian said UEL has experienced a “meteoric ascent” and described the University as a “mover and shaker” among modern universities.
Highlights in the Guardian University Guide 2026 league table include:
- UEL is ranked 33 out of 123 institutions, the University’s highest position ever in the Guardian league table. This is a rise of 23 places from 2025 and 80 places from 2023.
- UEL’s score in the Guardian’s own Value-Added metric (students’ ability to achieve good honours based on entry qualifications) increased by 24 places from 2025, placing UEL in the top three in the country.
- UEL ranked 2nd in London and 13th nationally for Satisfied with Assessment.
- UEL ranked 3rd in London and 29th nationally for Satisfied with Teaching.
- Several UEL subjects ranked in the top 10 nationally, including interior design, which was number one in the country. Others included sociology and social policy (4th); media and film studies (4th); and graphic design (10th).
- UEL’s ranking in Expenditure Per Student increased by 13 places in 2026, ranking the University 5th among London modern universities.
UEL’s performance is a reflection of the bold transformation delivered through its 10-year strategy, Vision 2028, which is redefining how higher education drives opportunity and renewal in challenging times. As the UK’s most socially inclusive university – opening doors for thousands of students and proving that talent exists across every community – UEL contributes over £1 billion each year to the economy and supports more than 4,000 jobs.
The University consistently ranks in the top 10 for graduating students’ positivity (National Student Survey) and was named the University of the Year for Teaching Quality by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025. UEL’s careers-first focus has also created one of the strongest entrepreneurial environments among UK universities; it is ranked 2nd in the UK for student start-ups, up from 90th just a few years ago, making it the largest, fastest mover in new business growth.
All this has resulted in students from all backgrounds who are prepared to seamlessly enter and contribute to a 5.0 economy and society: UEL has delivered the largest and fastest rise in graduate outcomes in the UK, with a more than 25 percentage point increase, significantly outperforming the national average.
The Guardian league table has run for decades, and labels itself “one of the UK’s most respected university rankings and a trusted source for students and families deciding where and what to study, both in the UK and internationally.”
Rachel Hall, Editor of the Guardian University Guide, said, “We know how much goes into the decision about where to study, from the quality of teaching to the experience of student life. That’s why we put so much care into the Guardian University Guide. It combines trusted rankings with fresh insight on what really shapes universities today. We’re proud it continues to help students and families make confident choices about the future.”
