Nursing students in the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience had the chance to learn first-hand from Lorraine Bess, Director of Quality at Barts Trust, who visited campus to share her expertise on the Patient Safety Incident Reporting Framework (PSIRF) and SEIPS, another safety protocol.
Ms Bess’s session combined professional insight with real-world examples, giving students the opportunity to explore how patient safety frameworks are applied in practice.
Through case studies and group discussions, students reflected on governance, safety culture and communication - all essential skills for future frontline professionals.
Feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive. One described the session as “very well presented and informative”, while another commented that “learning about PSIRF and SEIPS was eye-opening”.
This builds on a similar event earlier in the year, when the Research Team from Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) led an interactive session with students.
Together, these sessions highlight the strong partnerships the nursing courses have developed with NHS Trusts and the value of exposing students to professionals currently shaping healthcare practice.
Stephanie Ozegin, Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing, said:
Our students aren’t just learning theory – they’re meeting the people who are leading change in patient safety and quality of care. By connecting the classroom with the frontline, we’re preparing graduates who can step into healthcare settings with confidence, insight and a real understanding of the challenges they’ll face.”
