The Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability (RDCS) at the University of East London (UEL) is proud to announce a significant milestone in its mission to foster a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in East London. A total of 85 businesses have received support through the RDCS business support, accelerator programmes, workshops, and networking initiatives in the first half of 2025 alone. The growth is attributed to the scaling of incubator and accelerator programmes, the development of new business services, and key partnerships with business growth and support organisations.
The Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability is a cutting-edge hub focused on advancing green and digital skills, alongside innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives. It serves as a link for collaboration between UEL, industry leaders, and the local community, offering a range of successful programmes and facilities. One such facility is the business incubator hub (TerraDock), which provides low-cost space for start-ups, SMEs, and local creatives. With its focus on sustainability and technology, the RDCS is not only supporting business growth but also contributing to the development of a resilient and inclusive economy in East London.
A number of successful programmes have been delivered in the first six months of 2025, contributing to the impressive figures. Four incubator or accelerator programmes were delivered, including two Business Incubator Programmes by UEL's Royal Docks School of Business and Law (RDSBL). These programmes, held in January and June, saw an impressive 90 per cent global majority participation rate. The RDCS also hosted the Middlesex Nature Positive Accelerator in April and the MassChallenge AI and digital accelerator programme in June. The success of these programmes provides a direct link to the growth in membership for TerraDock, with a number of MassChallenge and Business Incubator programme businesses taking up membership as a result.
Beyond the accelerator programmes, the RDCS has expanded its business support clinics. The Tax and Legal Advice clinics are continuing to develop at the RDCS, offering sponsored advice to businesses and the community. In January, the centre launched the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics Community Support Centre (STEAM CSC) in collaboration with the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering (ACE), to provide sponsored advice in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. These services initially focused on digital business advice, with plans to expand to sustainable solutions.
The RDCS is also committed to ensuring its programmes are inclusive and equitable. The London Anchor Institution Network (LAIN) event in May supported small and diverse suppliers, helping SMEs gain access to contracts with large organisations. Of the 130 participants, 76 identified as diverse-led SMEs, with 68 being Black, Asian, and ethnically diverse and 43 being women-led. This demonstrates the centre's dedication to providing support to a wide range of entrepreneurs from the local community.
Adam Doyle, Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor (Careers and Employer Engagement), commented on the centre’s achievements:
We are incredibly proud of the progress made in the first half of 2025. The significant increase in entrepreneur programmes and business support is a testament to the hard work of our team and the growing engagement with our community and industry partners. By utilising our expertise from the University as a whole, we are establishing a strong foundation for business growth, skills development, and community impact across East London. This momentum is building an entrepreneurial ecosystem that is truly making a difference.”
The RDCS is on track to not only meet but exceed its targets for business support and diversity. The strong foundation being established for business growth and skills development shows that the RDCS is a vital asset to the East London community, poised for even greater impact in the future.
