The Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability (RDCS) is proud to highlight the remarkable growth and success of its Sustainable Enterprise Centre, TerraDock. The centre, which provides low-cost space for start-ups, SMEs, and artists, has seen its membership grow, creating a vibrant and dynamic community of innovators and entrepreneurs in East London. TerraDock is not just a physical space; it's a supportive environment designed to help new and growing businesses thrive, all while aligning with the RDCS's mission of promoting sustainable and green initiatives.
RDCS is a cutting-edge hub at the University of East London, dedicated to advancing green and digital skills, innovation, and entrepreneurship. It serves as a nexus for collaboration between the university, industry leaders, and the local community. TerraDock is a key component of the wider RDCS strategy to foster a resilient and inclusive economy. By offering affordable workspace and a collaborative network, it removes significant barriers to entry for new businesses and creative professionals. This supportive structure enables members to focus on developing their products and services, safe in the knowledge that they are part of an ecosystem that provides invaluable resources and community connections.
TerraDock’s members represent a diverse range of sectors, from technology and sustainability to art and design. This cross-pollination of industries encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and shared learning. Among the diverse businesses now calling TerraDock home are companies like AquaTech Solutions, a green technology firm developing water purification systems, and Urban Harvest, a start-up focused on vertical farming for city spaces. The community also includes creative businesses like East London Arts Collective, which provides a space for emerging artists, and ByteCraft, a digital design agency specialising in sustainable brand development. This ecosystem of members reflects the variety of innovation being supported at the RDCS.
The TerraDock community is a testament to the RDCS’s commitment to inclusivity and social value. The centre is actively working to meet its EDI goals for TerraDock by 2028, and a review of the current 27 businesses shows strong progress. At present, 55% of the businesses are owned or founded by members of the Global Majority, which is already ahead of the 50% goal set for 2028. Additionally, 35% of the businesses are female-led. The RDCS is focused on nurturing a growing number of female founders and female-led businesses, with further initiatives in development to sustain and grow this progress in the coming years. This focus on diversity ensures that the benefits of the RDCS's programmes, including TerraDock, are accessible to all members of the local community.
Sebastian Walker, Sustainable Enterprise Manager at the RDCS, commented on TerraDock's impact:
We are incredibly proud of the vibrant community that has flourished within TerraDock. Our goal was to create a low-cost, supportive environment where innovative start-ups and creative professionals could grow their businesses. The rapid increase in our membership and the calibre of the businesses we are attracting is a clear sign that we are succeeding. The collaborative spirit within the space is a powerful force for good, with businesses regularly sharing knowledge and supporting each other's growth. TerraDock is a living example of how the RDCS is turning its vision into reality, supporting the local economy and building a truly inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem here in East London."
The success of TerraDock is a powerful indicator of the RDCS's positive contribution to the local area. By providing essential infrastructure and a collaborative community, the centre is helping to build a stronger, more sustainable, and more prosperous future for East London.
