The University of East London (UEL) has been named a finalist in the 2025 PIEoneer Awards, recognised in the Employability International Impact Award category for its innovative Hackathon & Work Placement Initiative in India and the United Kingdom.
The initiative, part of UEL’s Careers First Guarantee and Global Campus strategy, connects students with industry leaders through immersive international experiences. The highlight of the programme was a hackathon held in Chennai, India, where 22 Engineering and Computing students collaborated directly with local employers on live challenges. This led to fully funded internships with top-tier organisations in India.
Gulnara Stover, Director of UEL Global Campus, said of the nomination:
This nomination is a testament to the creativity and dedication of our students, staff, and international partners. The programme brings our vision of global, career-focused education to life and strengthens our ties with the Indian business ecosystem.”
This recognition comes as UEL prepares to launch the next edition of the programme, which this year will expand to include Hyderabad alongside Chennai. A new group of students is set to travel to India in June to participate in the growing.
The winners of the PIEoneer Awards will be announced at a gala ceremony on Friday, 5 September 2025, at London’s historic Guildhall. Finalists will also be invited to an exclusive afternoon tea with event sponsors earlier in the day.
