Students from universities across London gathered at the University of East London’s Docklands campus for the Cross-Institutional Students’ Pharmacology Society Networking event.
The event brought together aspiring pharmacologists for a day of networking, collaboration and knowledge sharing.
The day began with a warm welcome from UEL’s pharmacology students, who invited guests to network over lunch while exploring a series of student-led poster displays. This was followed by oral presentations, where students shared insights from their third-year research projects and offered a glimpse into their placement experiences.
One UEL pharmacology student, Roxanne, drew particular attention for her presentation on a unique and impressive placement opportunity with GSK, a leading British multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company.
Speaking at the event, Roxanne said, “I hope to pursue my PhD with GSK one day. I’m especially interested in specialising in neuroscience-related work.
Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) student Elli shared, “It’s been really nice to hear about everyone’s third year projects as I’m about to start mine.’’
QMUL student Livi added, “As a medical student, learning about pharmacology has been really useful for me. It was great to hear about the GSK placement, I’ll definitely be signing up for that.’’
Following the presentations, students took part in a lively pharmacology-themed University Challenge. Teams competed in a fast-paced quiz, buzzing in to answer trivia questions and earn points through correct responses and bonus follow-ups. UEL delivered a strong performance, winning their play-off tie against the University of Hertfordshire. King’s College London edged out the University of East Anglia, while QMUL triumphed over University College London in a thrilling contest. With the highest scores, King’s and QMUL advanced to the final, where QMUL emerged as this year’s Pharmacology University Challenge champions.
Dr Samir Ayoub, Course Leader for Pharmacology at UEL, British Pharmacological Society Ambassador and lead organiser of the event, said, “I would like to give a massive shout out to our pharmacology students, who played a key role in organising this event.
Events like this are so important - they inspire and motivate students by giving them a platform to be the presenters, rather than just being presented to. It helps them feel heard and valued.’’
Summing up the experience, UEL Pharmacology student Megan said, “I really enjoyed seeing how the theory we've learned in our lectures applies to the real-life world.’’
UEL’s Pharmacology department looks forward to hosting more events like this in the future and is excited to see the incredible paths our students will take in their careers.
