The University of East London (UEL) brought UEL alumni and industry leaders together at a roundtable at Tampa Bay Wave in Florida to discuss how academics can support the UK-Florida trade agreement.
The event focused on UEL's role in driving impact within the UK-Florida Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The roundtable reinforced UEL's commitment to collaboration with Florida in key sectors, including fintech, life sciences, sustainability, and space exploration, aligning UEL's expertise with Florida's robust innovation ecosystem.
Key areas of UEL's engagement include:
- Fintech: UEL's Centre of FinTech is advancing research in blockchain, AI, and financial inclusion. The university is partnering with the University of South Florida (USF) on a fintech symposium in 2025, addressing global challenges in digital banking and regulatory innovation.
- Life Sciences and Health Tech: UEL's Smart Health Centre is pioneering AI-driven healthcare solutions, including predictive models for sports injuries and accessible digital health tools through the RIX Inclusive Research Institute.
- Sustainability: Through the Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability (RDCS) and the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI), UEL supports SMEs in green innovation and collaborates with USF on urban Food Forests, advancing climate resilience and renewable energy solutions.
- Space Sector: UEL is exploring new space engineering programs, aligning with Florida's leadership in aerospace and satellite technology.
UEL's presence in Fort Lauderdale and its partnership with Tampa Bay Wave further strengthens its connection to Florida's innovation landscape.
Professor Paul Marshall, Vice-President (Global Campus), Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Careers & Enterprise) at UEL said,
I look forward to continuing discussions with Department for Business and Trade (DBT) colleagues to establish structured workstreams that will help realize the full potential of the UK-Florida MoU. Together, we can drive impactful, sustainable innovation across both regions.
This roundtable underscores UEL's dedication to fostering entrepreneurship, workforce development, and cross-border collaboration.
