Our nursing students have recently completed their communication module which is delivered via an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). During these examinations, students were presented with a scenario to analyse. The scenario was acted out by their own lecturers to create different situations that mimic real healthcare dilemmas.
The School of Arts and Creative Industries (ACI) collaborated with our nursing department to make these scenarios come to life. Apart from the film department helping to capture and edit the online examination videos, drama students will also continue attending classes to play the roles of patients for nursing students to practice, helping bridge the gap between theory and the real world.
Senior Lecturer Pajany Vythelingum explained,
The exam will help our students distinguish between good and bad nursing practices.
This collaboration has helped expose our nursing students to real-life situations before attending their placements. The controlled environment is also a great opportunity for students to practice the techniques they’ve learned in their lectures without putting real patients at risk.
Pajany said, ‘Through this task, we challenge our students’ critical thinking whilst providing the appropriate support and guidance to give them every possible opportunity to succeed.’
