The University of East London’s annual Sports Performance Conference returned this year with a strong line-up of high-performance practitioners, elite athletes, and industry specialists, offering students and visitors rare access to voices from the top of sport.
The one-day event brought together experts from football, fencing, gymnastics, badminton, hockey, sport psychology and broadcasting, each sharing practical insights drawn from years at the highest level.
Talks ranged from Ben Harwood’s data-led approach to injury prevention in Tottenham Hotspur’s academy football to fencer Alexander Tofalides’ account of a 20-year journey to Olympic qualification and the resilience that sustained it.
Lauren Smith spoke about the collective effort behind elite badminton, while GB hockey coach Kwan Browne explored the shift from player to coach and the importance of developing others while developing yourself.
Feedback from students and external guests highlighted the impact of hearing personal, unfiltered stories from across the sporting landscape, with many praising the calibre of speakers and the clarity of the conference’s organisation. Attendees spoke of feeling “inspired”, “motivated”, and energised by the honesty and ambition on display.
Organiser Maria Goriup, Lecturer in Sports Rehabilitation and Therapy, said, “We designed the day to give our community direct contact with people who work at the highest level of sport. Access to these environments can feel distant, so bringing that knowledge onto our campus matters. It shows students what is possible and helps them understand the realities, demands and rewards of these careers.”
She added:
The success of the conference came from the openness of our speakers. They didn’t just talk about achievements; they talked about setbacks, doubts and the persistence behind success. That honesty is vital for anyone preparing to enter the industry.
With strong attendance and enthusiastic feedback, it reinforced UEL’s commitment to preparing graduates for real careers in a competitive field.
