Students at the University of East London had an unforgettable start to their journey during International Orientation Day. Held on Wednesday, 18 September at Sports Dock, the event was packed with talks, workshops and activities designed to help international students settle in and immerse themselves in UEL’s vibrant, diverse community.

The day kicked off with a very warm welcome by Sophie Bowen, Chief Student Officer, who opened the event with a symbolic pinning ceremony to mark the start of the students’ academic journey at UEL. In her opening address, Ms Bowen highlighted UEL’s commitment to fostering inclusion and diversity, saying “We are incredibly proud to be one of the most diverse universities in the UK and hold dearly the commitment of inclusion as one of our three core values.”

She also highlighted UEL’s strategic focus on addressing health and economic inequalities, saying,

Our university’s overall strategy addresses health and economic inequalities, aiming to contribute to positive social change both locally and globally. And you’re joining us at an exciting point – as for the first time ever, our graduating students’ overall positivity about their experience has placed UEL in the Top Ten Higher Education Institutions out of over 160 in the UK in the recent National Student Survey.”

Following the opening remarks, students were introduced to the resources and support services that will accompany them throughout their studies. Nicole Redman, Director of Student Services shared insights into UEL’s Career Zone, which offers guidance on job searches, interview preparation and career development. She also highlighted the role of the Student Union and Student Life services, which help students engage with various societies and communities, ensuring support through their academic journey.

Among the excited newcomers was Kosha Bhatt, who travelled from India to study for an MSc in Artificial intelligence. She expressed her excitement about meeting people from other communities and her enthusiasm about the supportive environment at UEL’. She said, “I am very excited to meet people from different communities. The staff has been so welcoming, I feel blessed to have chosen this university over others. I chose the AI course because I thought the course would make me industry-ready.”

Another enthusiastic student, Janvi Pate, who also travelled from India to study for an MSc in Artificial Intelligence, shared her excitement about her new surroundings. “It’s thrilling to be in a new country, meeting new people. The campus by the river is beautiful, and I already feel like this is my second home. The university is well-ranked, and the environment is amazing.”

The students were the true stars of the day, proudly displaying their UEL pins as they mingled and shared their excitement. Emily Ryan, who came from the USA to study a BSc in Psychology with Child Development, reflected on making new connections and the opportunities ahead. She said, “I am a people person, so I am excited to meet new people. London feels fast-paced, with bigger opportunities and the possibilities here are endless. I am not sure what to do next, but I chose UEL because I know they will help me figure out the next step in my career.”

After the welcome ceremony, students explored the campus, visiting sports facilities, accommodation, classrooms, and laboratories. The tour also included a “Support Fair” where various stalls provided information on UEL’s services, Schools, Student Life radio and Library services.

The orientation was not just about practical information; it also featured fun activities to help students get to know each other and foster a sense of community. The students participated in a trivia quiz, with prizes awarded to the winners. A DJ kept the energy high, and students enjoyed a variety of food trucks that offered a taste of London’s diverse culinary scene.

Madison Schaffer, who has travelled from the USA to study a BA in Acting for Stage and Screen, summed up her feelings about starting at UEL. She said, “I feel both nervous and excited to start this new part of my life. I love theatre. I want to teach kids in my career, and I know this course will be great for me to achieve that.”
