The University of East London (UEL) has conferred an honorary doctorate on Tevin Tobun, a distinguished entrepreneur and philanthropist.
He received the accolade as hundreds of graduates from the Royal Docks School of Business of Law received their degrees at a ceremony that took place on 3 September on the Docklands campus.
The citation that accompanied the doctorate captured Mr Tobun’s remarkable 23-year career and celebrated his visionary leadership, innovative business ventures and profound commitment to social responsibility.
Since graduating in 2001, Tevin Tobun has built an impressive portfolio of businesses across various sectors, particularly in technology and logistics. His journey began with the founding of GV Group, which has grown into one of the UK's largest independently owned transport and logistics companies, employing over 1,000 people.
Mr Tobun’s entrepreneurial spirit has driven him to explore new frontiers, leading to the creation of ROUTD Technology and other impactful ventures. Platebox, for instance, delivers over 10 million school meals nationwide, ensuring that children receive nutritious food. Foodmove, another of his enterprises, manages 15 million deliveries to businesses, hotels, arenas, and restaurants, showcasing the breadth of his logistical expertise.
Beyond his commercial success, Mr Tobun is widely recognised for his philanthropic efforts. His recent induction into the Dr Martin Luther King Board of Sponsors at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States, acknowledges his significant charitable contributions and the social impact of his businesses.
Mr Tobun’s contributions to higher education are equally noteworthy. He serves as an active council member of the Open University and is a former board member of Middlesex University, where he earned his BSc in Health Studies and Combined Studies. His involvement in these institutions reflects his ongoing commitment to advancing education and academic excellence.
As Chair of Inspirational You, Tevin mentors and empowers emerging Black and Asian leaders and entrepreneurs. Additionally, as a life patron of the charity Springboard, he helps young people gain employment in the hospitality and food service industries.
Through the Tobun Foundation, Mr Tobun has provided substantial support to the education and career opportunities of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. The foundation offers financial assistance and mentorship and empowers students to achieve their academic goals.
Receiving his honorary doctorate in business, he said,
To have my work recognised in this way by UEL is a huge honour. The University has a special resonance for me - it is an institution that I’ve looked up to for a long time and I’m delighted to be here today. I have always wanted to support education and career opportunities of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, and I am proud that UEL champions this.
