MA Professional Landscape Architecture students from the University of East London and the University of South Florida (USF) presented their joint research at a symposium on 23 October 2024.
This event marked the end of a semester-long partnership focused on developing principles for designing successful Food Forests.
A Food Forest is a community-growing area that mimics natural woodland ecosystems to create a self-sustaining, productive landscape. These innovative spaces are designed to enhance community cohesion and reduce food poverty.
Professor David Tann, Vice Provost (Technologies) and Dean of the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering at UEL, emphasised the importance of this collaboration and the University’s commitment to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
He stated,
We have a lot in common and many significant projects where we can collaborate closely. What’s great about this is our shared goal of encouraging future leaders and students to pursue unique endeavours. I hope today marks the beginning of a fruitful collaboration."
Through this project, students have gained key skills in both remote and in-person teamwork, as well as in design and horticulture.
This collaboration is the first of its kind between UEL and USF, but both institutions hope it will become a regular feature of the Landscape Architecture curriculum.
The symposium held online via MS Teams, was part of UEL’s Year of Science focus and highlighted applied sustainability projects from both universities.
The event was hosted by the USF Patel College of Global Sustainability in collaboration with UEL’s Sustainability Research Institute (SRI) and Royal Docklands Centre for Sustainability (RDCS).
The symposium featured panels and presentations on Social Sustainability, Material Resource Use and Waste Management, and Urban Food Forest Development.
This partnership also supports the development of a Virtual Global Exchange (VGE) programme.
