The University of East London (UEL) is proud to announce its inclusion in The Commonwealth at 75, a prestigious new publication marking a significant milestone in the Commonwealth’s history. As one of the contributors, UEL joins an esteemed group of institutions and individuals in showcasing the impact and progress of the Commonwealth. UEL’s inclusion highlights its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and social equity, and reflects the University’s future-orientated approach to education and global challenges.
Launched on Wednesday, 9 October at the iconic Westminster Abbey, The Commonwealth at 75 explores the Commonwealth’s impact across social, technological, commercial, and cultural spheres, and UEL’s chapter, Pioneering Futures, highlights the University’s pioneering work in areas such as green technology, social equity, and global education.
A spotlight on UEL’s pioneering work
UEL has always championed social inclusion and innovation, and its contribution to this book reflects its ongoing mission to create life-enhancing opportunities for students across the globe. In the chapter, Pioneering Futures, UEL showcases its world-leading work in sustainability, nursing, and industry-focused education. This includes the development of Sugarcrete®, a low-carbon, sustainable building material, the creation of a world-class Hospital and Primary Care Training Hub with an inter-professional simulation suite equipped with augmented and virtual reality technology, and the Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability, an incubator for green-tech enterprises.
Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Amanda Broderick said,
At UEL, we are committed to diversifying the talent pipeline and addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Being part of The Commonwealth at 75 showcases our shared values with this important community, and our role in shaping the future of global education and sustainability.”
Royal recognition of UEL’s work
UEL’s inclusion in The Commonwealth at 75 is particularly noteworthy, as one of the first royal visits made by His Majesty, King Charles III after his ascension was to the University of East London. In 2023, during UEL’s 125th anniversary celebrations, the King visited the Stratford campus, which houses groundbreaking projects in healthcare and sustainability. His visit highlighted UEL’s leadership in diversity, inclusion, and innovation - values that closely align with the Commonwealth’s mission. This connection between UEL and the monarchy further solidifies the University's standing as a pioneering thinking institution committed to global progress.
Looking forward
As UEL continues to grow, doubling in size in the last five years and welcoming students from over 160 nationalities, its vision for a more inclusive and sustainable future remains at the forefront. With its significant contribution to The Commonwealth at 75, UEL’s pioneering work will reach an even wider global audience, reaffirming its position as one of the UK’s most visionary universities.
