UEL sport students, Akshaya Alarambil and David Elliot, recently completed their work placements at the Fight for Peace Academy in North Woolwich, Newham - a global organisation using boxing and martial arts, combined with education and personal development to realise the potential of young people in communities affected by crime and violence.
With Akshaya taking on the role of a sport scientist, and David being a strength and conditioning coach, Fight for Peace Supervisor and UEL alumni, Silvino Domingos, shared that both students offered invaluable skills and knowledge to the team.
Silvino said,
Our boxers and muai thai athletes really benefited from Akshaya’s work in the gym and the physiology lab. She conducted detailed performance tests, giving each athlete a clear understanding of their physical strengths and areas where they can improve.’’
Equally, Silvino expressed how David was crucial in helping members customise their training plans, attempt new exercises and improve their form to achieve better results. David shared how he was particularly happy to practice the skills he had learned on his course and from his recent PT qualification.
Some of the fitness tests Akshaya was able to conduct included the VO2 max, reaction time, and flexibility. This involved setting up equipment, enforcing standardised protocols, and interpreting the results to inform training plans.
With our Docklands campus being down the road, this opportunity with Fight for Peace was great for our students to interact with the local community, build their confidence and get a taste of the real working world.
We are excited to see students from our Sport courses thrive and hope this has been a memorable experience they can carry into their future careers.
