Fahima Mustafe was nominated for the Student Nursing Times' Mary Seacole Award for bridging her professional aspirations to help others by supporting some of the most vulnerable in her local community.
Growing up in a single-parent family, she used her own experience and money to help set up a local café supporting those experiencing domestic violence, insecure housing and food poverty.
At the same time, she launched an outreach service distributing cooked meals to families during school holidays. Every day over Christmas, the café cooked 150 meals for families who needed help feeding their children.
Fahima, pictured below, who has recently graduated with first-class honours in UEL's pre-registration BSc Adult Nursing, said,
I was very surprised to be nominated, let alone win. It feels amazing and I am so thankful to UEL and all the nursing staff.
Now I am qualified, I plan on going into community nursing as well as lead mental health workshops."
Professor Jane Perry, dean of the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience at UEL, said, "Our students are among those who spent the past 18 months on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic. I am so proud of what Fahima and the rest of her cohort have achieved. They have gained the skills and experience to ensure successful careers."
Dr Beverly Joshua, head of nursing for UEL, added, "Fahima’s award is a testament to the commitment she put into her studies and work. It is a privilege to be supporting the next generation of nursing professionals."
Two other UEL students, Nada Essia and Ellie Bull, were also shortlisted for the Nursing Associate Trainee of the Year; and UEL was shortlisted for Nursing Associate Training Programme Provider of the Year (pre-registration).
Since its launch, the number of students studying to be Nursing Associates with UEL has grown rapidly from 60 students in 2019 to 200 in 2020.
Professor Amanda Broderick, vice-chancellor and president, remarked, "We are immensely proud of Fahima, whose experience highlights the importance of supporting one another in these unprecedented times. Fahima's achievements reflect our University values - putting equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of what we do, as outlined in our strategy, Vision 2028."
The 21 winners were announced at an afternoon ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, recognising their hard work, innovation, and dedication to nursing education.
