Thirty University of East London (UEL) students took part in a virtual skills workshop with IBM, one of the global leaders in Artificial Intelligence (AI) on 17 May 2024.
The session, held as part of UEL’s acclaimed Diversity of Thought (DOT) programme, saw the computer science students gain insights into how the company operates, mentoring and interview techniques, as well as more technical subjects, such as AI building.
They also gained useful proof of their new-found expertise, earning three IBM certificates in skills building, design, and academic innovation, enhancing their appeal to future employers.
The skills workshop was organised by UEL Employer Engagement Officer, Dr Theodora Thomadaki, in collaboration with IBM UK University Programmes Lead, John McNamara.
Speaking afterwards, Mr McNamara did not hold back on his admiration for the University’s programme.
He said,
UEL’s Diversity of Thought programme is a beacon of progress and inclusivity. By nurturing diverse talent and fostering innovative thinking, it not only enriches the student experience but also contributes to a more vibrant and dynamic workforce. Kudos to UEL for championing diversity and empowering the next generation of leaders!”
The programme, started by the University in 2020, aims to drive aspiration and social mobility by addressing key stages of the recruitment cycle where students are underrepresented.
It works with dozens of blue-chip companies including Metropolitan Police Services, IBM, Morgan Sindall, AWS, Horniman Museum, V&A, Siemens, MSG, Dataminr, English National Ballet, Taylor Benett Foundation, ITV, VML, Clifford Chance, Colas Rail, Dishoom, Rosewood London, Barclays, NatWest and London City Airport with the aim of inspiring a step-change within early talent recruitment.
