The Department of Allied and Public Health Professionals at the University of East London (UEL) organised a knowledge exchange conference for Practice Education at the Stratford campus on June 21, 2024. This event brought together pan-London-based partner NHS Trusts to address the challenges of inclusion related to students identifying as neurodiverse within clinical practice.
The head of the department, Caroline Doolan, welcomed the conference, calling it a vital opportunity for collaboration and engagement with our NHS community. She said,
The conference raises the profile of UEL as a leader and preferred provider in practice education for health professionals in London, especially at a time when the NHS faces challenges and limited placement opportunities.
The conference further aimed to engage new providers and potential employers to foster work-based learning partnerships. UEL’s strong reputation for supporting educators in work-based learning environments was central to the conference’s agenda. Laura Smith, Director of NHS Workforce Training & Education, delivered a keynote speech on "Neurodivergence Superpower," highlighting the strengths and advantages of neurodiversity and inclusion.
The event featured several key presentations and discussions. Charlie Cairns, UEL Allied Health Subject Area Lead, spoke on "Framing Neurodiversity," while Alex Clarke from the Lewisham Adult Therapy Team discussed "Practice Education Expert Student Experience." A panel discussion also addressed "Matching Reasonable Adjustments with the Pressures of Placement Provision."
Attendees participated in hands-on workshops focused on recognising and working with neurodiversity in practice education, establishing learning styles, and leading difficult practice education conversations.
Dr Carol Resteghini, Senior Lecturer in Allied and Public Health and conference lead, highlighted the active participation of students. She said,
UEL Allied Health Leadership placement students presented their work on student views and neurodiversity to delegates from over 20 different employer partners. The students demonstrated outstanding professionalism and key employability skills.
The conference underscored UEL’s leadership in practice education for Allied Health Professionals and its commitment to fostering inclusive and supportive learning environments.
