The end-of-year showcase for the work of students from the University of East London’s School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering (ACE) took place on 7 June 2024, with a vast range of outstanding projects and designs on display.
The event, held at the University’s Architecture and Visual Arts building and the Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability was followed by an awards ceremony, with the best work selected by academics from the school and leading industry experts. A full list of the winners follows this article.
ACE’s Dean, Professor David Tann was impressed by the commitment and achievements, of both those working at the School and those studying there. He said
I am incredibly proud of staff and students. Their creativity has no boundaries and their commitment to excellence is inspiring.
One of the mechanical engineering projects in the showcase aimed to illustrate how to optimise electric vehicle batteries, in order to make them more efficient. One of the students involved, Rukhieya Osman, spoke of the value of the day’s event. She said, “This showcase allowed me to explore real-life challenges and come up with solutions to issues that are key to the engineering world.”
It was just one example of a wide variety of student work, ranging from demonstrations of rotating solar panels to presentations about extending London City Airport to a poster detailing how to build a predictive machine-learning model to assess the quality of red wine.
One of the panel of judges, Steve Acott, Membership Development Manager at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, was impressed by the range of projects on show. He said, “I think the students’ work is fantastic. It was very clearly presented with aims, methodology and findings which makes it easy to understand for non-expert audiences.”
The event also saw the building of architecture installations in the courtyard of the Architecture and Visual Arts building, with a focus on sustainable construction materials. There was also a display of architectural models in the atrium. Sagarita Bhattacharjee, who’s studying for a master’s degree in architecture and urbanism, worked on the installation of the Trillium Pavilion in the courtyard. She said, “I really enjoyed the process and learnt so much. I have learnt how to bend copper and experiment with a lot of materials.”
The Lightwell and the Way Out East gallery were also filled with work by students from the school’s Visual Arts cluster, from real-life models of chairs to artworks narrating students’ lived experiences, to branding for a restaurant.
Head of Department, Carl Callaghan, said that this year had been a particularly exciting one for staff and students, “We had lots of really interesting research and students’ projects, for example in robotics, biomaterials, and in advanced technologies such as printed concrete made into models for housing. In every room, there was an exciting new thing to see.”
The awards ceremony was held in the evening at the Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability. Louisa Amelia Tulloch, winner of the Dean's Prize for Architecture, was thrilled her work had been recognised. She said, “I had the best year at the University of East London, and everyone at ACE has been absolutely great. Professors and staff believe in me and have been so supportive. I am sad to leave but hoping to secure a job soon.”
Computing and Digital Technologies Award winner, Tianning Luo, was delighted to have had the opportunity to present his work to other students and praised the help he’d got from his supervisor, Dr Fadi Safieddine. He said, “Dr Safieddine helped me so much with this project, with his knowledge and his motivation keeping me pushing forward. These events are very exciting to see other students’ ideas and how they approach problems.”
Meera Patel was delighted to win the MSc Construction and Engineering Management Award for her dissertation. She said, “Getting this award, especially for my dissertation which was such hard work, is really motivating for me. My work is around Building Information Modelling (BIM) so I am looking for jobs in the area and hoping to study a PhD in BIM and other technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.”
