The University of East London (UEL) and Siemens had a big win at this year’s Institute of Student Employers (ISE) Awards, taking home the award for ‘Outstanding University Partnership with an Employer’.
The award recognises partnerships between universities and employers that enhance graduates’ skills and employability and prepare students for the workforce.
UEL and Siemens exemplify this commitment through the innovative Diversity of Thought (DoT) programme, which has also received an Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS) award.
The programme addresses critical stages in the recruitment cycle and provides underrepresented students with work-based learning, mentoring, work experience and more, helping to develop skills, build social capital, and diversify the talent pipeline.
Through their partnership, UEL and Siemens offers students rich experiences and provides them with the confidence to successfully deliver high-level projects that will significantly build their skills and experience.
The collaboration is a shining example of a dynamic partnership built on a shared mission, with both organisations dedicated to achieving the 2030 Net Zero goal and diversifying the early talent pipeline for jobs in the green economy.
Students are the heart of this partnership, gaining invaluable opportunities to work with world-leading experts in Greentech and engineering. This equips them with the tools to help safeguard the planet and advance their careers.
Cherise Basslian, UEL’s Director of Careers and Student Enterprise, said,
This award recognises UEL and Siemens' shared commitment to preparing the next generation for a sustainable future. Through the innovative DoT [Diversity of Thought] program, we're equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the green economy and achieve the 2030 net zero goals. By fostering diversity in GreenTech and engineering, UEL is readying a future workforce empowered to safeguard our planet."
The program goes beyond just technical skills. It emphasizes the importance of sustainability knowledge across all industries, giving graduates a competitive edge in the job market. A key element is the co-created "Sustainability Development Plan," which empowers students to apply their sustainability knowledge in real-world scenarios, develop their skills, and understand their carbon footprint.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan celebrated UEL and Siemens’ impactful partnership and joint efforts in tackling the climate crisis to achieve a shared ‘goal of global importance’.
He said, “I applaud the university’s visible and vocal drive to improve sustainability in all areas. Throughout its practices, teaching, and culture, the institution is aiming to empower staff and students to champion sustainability and develop the skills and innovation for a green economy.”
The award is a testament to UEL and Siemens’ unwavering commitment to supporting students. Through mentorship, guidance, and real-world experiences, the partnership is nurturing and inspiring the next generation of leaders to achieve success in their chosen careers.
