The University of East London’s mighty marketing team has taken the top prize at the 2024 Heist Awards, beating several other universities to be named Marketing Team of the Year.
The annual awards – often referred to as the “Oscars of higher education marketing” – celebrate the very best work across the sector, from student recruitment and engagement to marketing and communications for universities and colleges across the UK.
In addition to scooping the top gong, UEL came away with a silver award for the Best Use of Data, Insight or Marketing Research for its work on an annual ‘Brand Tracker’, and two bronze awards for Most Effective Use of Digital or Social Media (UEL X Mob Kitchen), and Best Low Budget Initiative (Woodland Tribe collaboration).
David Smith, Associate Director of Brand and Marketing, said the accolades were incredible recognition of the hard work carried out by marketing team, and the wider external relations directorate, over the past 12 months, tackling – and delivering – major projects including UEL’s 125th anniversary, the opening of the Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability, and a visit from King Charles III.
He said, “We are so proud of the campaigns we have produced, and how we have worked together as a team to nurture talent, think outside the box, and ultimately deliver innovative marketing which celebrates UEL’s values of inclusion, courage, and passion, and speaks to our students – present and future.
“Since 2018 we have made major strides as a marketing team, so to have our work praised so highly is an amazing honour, and it positions us as leader in the higher education sector.”
In awarding the “jewel in the crown” of the Heist Awards, the judges praised UEL’s marketing team for the assets they created over the past year which, the judges said, “clearly demonstrated how the institution's values align with the team's culture of innovation and creativity”.
The recognition builds on what has already been a winning year for teams across the University’s External Relations Department, which has also won:
- Best Corporate Event at The Conferencing and Events Awards
- Gold Award for Best Internal Communications and Engagement Initiative in Education and Private Sector at the Internal Communications and Engagement Awards
- Silver Award for Best Marketing Initiative at the CASE Circle of Excellence Awards
- Content Marketer of the Year at the Higher Education Marketing Awards – won by Rukshana Shaw-Porter
