Our School of Architecture, Computing, and Engineering (ACE) has been highly praised by students in the 2024 National Student Survey (NSS).

Highlights from the annual survey include the University ranking first in London in nine categories for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence courses, as well as first in London across five categories for Civil Engineering, and first in London for Fine Art, in relation to the teaching of the course.

Professor David Tann, Dean of the School of ACE, welcomed the results and said,

These outstanding NSS results demonstrate our commitment to innovative, practical teaching and fostering a supportive learning environment at the school, contributing to the University's success in ranking top three in the UK for student experience and first in London."

Architecture and Visual Arts

The BSc (Hons) Architecture programme at UEL gained outstanding feedback from its students, with an impressive 98 per cent of respondents expressing positive views when asked about the teaching on their course.

Recent UEL graduate Louisa Tulloch described how encouraging the architecture academic team has been to her. She said, “Professors and staff believe in me and have been so supportive. I am sad to leave, but hoping to secure a job soon.”

The Interior Design programme has also been highly rated by students, with 95 per cent of those surveyed responding positively about the teaching they received.

Our Fine Art courses have achieved a significant milestone by being ranked first in London for ‘Teaching on my Course’. This top ranking showcases the exceptional quality of education and industry-focused teaching staff in the Visual Arts department.

Engineering and Construction

The Civil Engineering course at UEL achieved a perfect score in student satisfaction, with all students surveyed responding positively to the quality of teaching, giving a 100 per cent satisfaction rate. Additionally, the course ranked first in London across five categories, including ‘Teaching on my Course’ and ‘Learning Opportunities’.

Computer Science and Digital Technologies

The Computer Science course also received high praise from students, with 93 per cent of respondents rating the teaching quality positively. Moreover, the course ranked first in London in four categories, including ‘Teaching on my Course’ and ‘Learning Opportunities’.

Riazul Islam, a Bachelor of Science student studying Computer Science, was pleased with his course and the support he received to date. He said, “The university has been incredibly supportive of my final year project on using AI for hand gesture recognition. My tutors and professors have given me the knowledge I needed and pointed me in the right direction to develop my project.”

Similarly, the Cyber Security and Networks course received a 93 per cent positive response rate regarding teaching quality.

The Data Science and Artificial Intelligence course at UEL ranked first in London in nine categories, including ‘Teaching on my Course’ and ‘Learning Opportunities’. This outstanding performance highlights the comprehensive curriculum and practical experience of the course, preparing students for the rapidly evolving fields of data science and AI.

Outstanding performance across UEL

These results reflect UEL’s position as the student experience-focused and careers-first university of the future. The University has achieved an outstanding top three in the UK for student experience and first in London.

The 2024 NSS results reflect the School of Architecture, Computing, and Engineering's commitment to academic excellence and student satisfaction. The high ratings across various courses show that students value the industry-ready focus and supportive learning environment that ACE provides to its students. As the School continues to foster academic and professional growth, these achievements set a strong foundation for future students.

Gaurav Malik, Director of Education and Experience, said the results show the commitment of the School to creating a positive experience for students. He said, “We are very proud of the results; it is a testament to the dedication of our staff who work hard to ensure every student in ACE succeeds.”

Spaces to study in some of UEL’s highly-regarded ACE courses are available through Clearing, offering students the opportunity to join this vibrant academic community:

  • BA (Hons) Fine Art
  • BA (Hons) Interior Design
  • BSc (Hons) Architecture (ARB/RIBA) Part 1
  • BSc (Hons) Computer Science

  • BSc (Hons) Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

About the NSS

The NSS is an annual survey of nearly 350,000 students across the UK, managed by the Office for Students. The survey is one of the largest of its kind in the world, asking students across the UK about a range of factors, including their academic experience, teaching and assessments, and institutions’ mental wellbeing services. Some 76 per cent of UEL’s students participated in this year’s survey, which is four per cent above the national average.

UEL aggregated a count of positivity responses from ‘very good’ and ’good’ as a percentage to create a proxy positivity score. This is different from ‘Overall Satisfaction’, which has been since 2023 an optional question for respondents. The data we have used is based on the scores from 26 NSS questions for Institutions with over 1,000 responses.

Riazul Islam said UEL was key for the development of his hand recognition using AI project.
