Background
Last summer, Architecture and Visual Arts (AVA) students were asked to create a large sculpture to celebrate 125 years of UEL, surrounded by a landscaped area, to be installed at the vehicular entrance of our Docklands Campus, that:
- communicated UEL’s values and identity from a distance, up close and at speed
- provided an experiential connection for our diverse community, connecting with viewers from every
angle and engaging participation in the art - created a sense of arrival that acts as both a greeting and farewell; and,
- embodied UEL’s low carbon agenda by utilising low carbon materials.
Students were challenged to present their designs to the UEL executive board using computer-generated images to showcase their sculptures in situ, coupled with details of what inspired their creations, and what materials and methods of production they would use to fabricate the final piece. After careful deliberation, a winning design was chosen.
Winning Design
The winning design is called ‘Timeless Flight’ and was created by students, Stephanie Stocks, Rafael Ives Ribeiro, Md Tanjir Chowdhury, and Ayodele Victor, supported by the mentorship of tutors, Clare Penny and Nayden Hadzhiev. The design represents the spirit of learning and pays tribute to UEL’s phoenix.
Unveiling
Timeless Flight will be unveiled by John Garwood, Chair of the Board of Governors on 29 February at 4:30pm as part of the illuminating programme of events taking place at our 2024 After Dark Festival.
