The University of East London (UEL) has received funding to provide 66 bursaries of £10,000 each for students taking an MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.
Underrepresented groups, such as women, Black students and the disabled, will get priority for the scholarships. The funding comes from the Office for Students and is available for those studying in the academic year 2024/5.
The head of UEL’s Department for Computer Science & Digital Technologies, Dr Aaron Kans, stressed that those applying did not need a first degree in computing. He said, “The good news is that students do not need to be from a computing background to study on this course. We are particularly keen to support applicants from underrepresented groups including female, Black, and disabled students.”
Alpha Umaru Bah, a student who received the scholarship in the current academic year said doing the MSc had been a significant boost to his career. He said, “As a law graduate it equipped me with the necessary expertise to navigate the intersection of law and technology. That bolstered my ability to address complex legal issues in an increasingly digital world. I encourage students to apply as it will expand their career opportunities in a technology-driven environment.”
The course teaches students computing fundamentals, such as programming and numeracy skills. But it also provides practical, hands-on experience in AI and Data Science, using industry standard tools. That gives graduates a variety of advanced intellectual and transferable skills and the practical knowledge they need for a career in IT.
Tokunbo Adenireti Durosinmi, another scholarship winner on the course, said she wanted to be the first Black woman from her community to become a systems architect. And she praised the University for the help she’d received while studying. She said, “UEL is world-class, with incredible academic facilities and lectures that supported me.”
Students who do take the course are likely to find their skills in high demand. The rapid evolution of technology has created an unprecedented demand for graduates with expertise in data science and AI. UEL’s location at the heart of the East London tech revolution, state-of-the-art facilities and world-leading AI and data science staff make this the ideal course for students aiming for high-paying careers in IT.
Dr Amin Karami, Senior Lecturer at UEL’s Department for Computer Science & Digital Technologies, encouraged students to apply for the MSc, saying, “Don't miss out on the chance to gain in-demand skills and kickstart your high-paying career in tech. Enrol now and fulfil your potential with the University of East London.” More information and details about how to apply for the MSc in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science can be found on the course page.
