Organised as part of the University’s Diversity of Thought (DoT) Programme, the initiative aimed to expose students to leading industry professionals and inspire diverse perspectives in law. The visit gave students a chance to explore the world of a global law firm, gain insights into legal careers, and connect with professionals from various stages of their career journey at Baker McKenzie.
The day’s agenda was designed to be informative and interactive, starting with an Introduction to Baker McKenzie, giving students a comprehensive overview of the firm’s culture, values, and international presence. This was followed by a Commercial Awareness Workshop, where students were challenged to think critically about real-world business scenarios and how they intersect with legal practice.
Next, the Careers in Law Panel brought together members of the Baker McKenzie team, from associates to partners, who shared their career paths, day-to-day responsibilities, and personal experiences. The morning concluded with an Application Workshop, offering practical advice and tips on how to craft standout applications for training contracts and internships.
The visit ended with a Networking Lunch, where students had the chance to meet and engage informally with current trainees at Baker McKenzie and ask them questions about the realities of training at a global law firm.
UEL’s Employer Engagement Officer, Costa Roussis who organised the visit said,
The visit provided students with an invaluable opportunity to take their career aspirations to the next level. It was encouraging to see such a high level of engagement throughout the day, as students made the most of this unique experience. The Baker McKenzie team curated a comprehensive agenda that gave attendees a thorough understanding of the firm, the legal profession, and the application process. Students left with valuable insights and meaningful connections, gaining a clearer picture of what it takes to thrive in the legal field."
