The University of East London has partnered with Chitkara Design School, part of Chitkara University in India, to create a new collaborative module for students studying Fashion Marketing and Communication and Fashion Design.
The initiative, co-led by Dr Sharon N Hughes, Course Leader and Senior Lecturer of Fashion Marketing and Communication at UEL, and Dr Vaibbhavi Pruthviraj Ranavaade, Dean of the Fashion Department at Chitkara University, involves more than 30 students – 11 from UEL and around 20 from Chitkara.
The 12-week module aims to blend the rich cultural heritage and innovative design practices of both the UK and India together, focusing on sustainability and international market expansion. Students will gain practical experience in cross-cultural collaboration, sustainable design, and effective marketing strategies, preparing them to tackle the challenges of the global fashion industry.
Dr Hughes said,
Our students are coming together in this partnership with Chitkara Design School to build a sustainable fashion industry for the future. It’s not just a learning experience but a strong link between two cultures. My goal is to educate the next generation of responsible fashion industry executives by exposing them to other points of view and encouraging them to think creatively. This will help them succeed in an increasingly globalised fashion business."
This module aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the global fashion landscape, with a focus on sustainability. By exploring cross-cultural collaboration, students will develop the skills to foster innovation and creativity in fashion design and marketing. Additionally, the module will delve into sustainable design and marketing practices, empowering students to create and promote environmentally responsible fashion products.
Ultimately, it’s hoped this collaborative approach will prepare students to become leaders in the sustainable fashion industry, capable of navigating global markets and driving positive change in the industry.
