The University of East London has been shortlisted for the 2024 Green Gown Awards in the Digital Futures category. This accolade recognises UEL’s pioneering Living Lab IoT platform, developed in collaboration with Siemens, which is driving significant advances in sustainability and innovation.
The Living Lab is a state-of-the-art platform that integrates real-time data from across UEL’s campuses, turning physical spaces into dynamic testbeds for research and innovation. Located at its Docklands Campus in the University’s Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability, the Living Lab aims to connect the entire university and local partners into an interconnected smart community, driving forward low-carbon learning and innovation. This initiative aligns with the University’s Vision 2028 strategy for sustainability and supports its commitment to achieving net zero carbon by 2030. It enhances resource efficiency, optimises energy use, and reduces carbon emissions, while also offering students and researchers invaluable hands-on learning and experimentation opportunities
In its Digital Futures category, the Green Gown Awards celebrate institutions that are leading the way in sustainability through innovative digital solutions. This year, a record 133 finalists from 84 institutions across the UK and Ireland were selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants. The awards highlight the most impactful and transformative projects in higher and further education, showcasing the sector’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
Commenting on the Green Gown Awards shortlisting, Professor Matt Bellgard, UEL’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Impact & Innovation,) said,
We are honoured to be shortlisted for the Green Gown Awards. This acknowledgment underscores our commitment to sustainability and our ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. The Living Lab exemplifies our dedication to integrating innovative technology with environmental stewardship, providing our students and researchers with the tools they need to drive forward our net-zero vision.”
