The University of East London (UEL), in partnership with Creative Newham, is thrilled to announce the launch of an exciting initiative: the Cultural Producers Programme.
Starting in October 2024, this innovative programme aims to transform the landscape of cultural event production by providing a sector-led professional development opportunity for young people from underrepresented communities within Newham.
This is a fantastic opportunity for young creatives aged between 18 and 30, based in Newham, to immerse themselves in the dynamic world of cultural event production. It offers 25 weeks of paid learning opportunity, on a part-time basis.
Programme overview
The Cultural Producers Programme invites 14 individuals to join a comprehensive training programme that offers a rare chance to gain hands-on experience and invaluable knowledge in producing skills and applying them to cultural, health and environmental events. The programme is open to 18-30 year olds currently living, or studying in Newham who have worked or volunteered in any creative organisation and who have the passion and drive to pursue a career in this field.
Throughout the flexible six-month programme, participants will be equipped with the tools, skills, and experience needed to thrive in the creative sector and contribute to the cultural enrichment of Newham and beyond.
Programme highlights
- Workshops and training: Delivered by leading industry experts from the cultural, health, and environmental sectors, these sessions will cover a wide range of topics essential for the production of special events, shows, festivals, concerts and more.
- Mentoring and coaching: Each participant will receive mentorship and coaching from a team of award-winning practitioners, ensuring personalised support and reinforcement of their learning.
- Paid placements: Each participant will be paid the London Living Wage to work with an organisation from either the cultural, health, or environmental sector. This hands-on experience will provide practical skills as a Producer, including turning ideas into reality, managing budgets and reaching target audiences.
Empowering the next generation of Cultural Leaders
The aim of this project is to empower individuals from the local community to become the next generation of cultural leaders in the borough. The programme is particularly seeking applications from people underrepresented in these industries – including those from the global majority, those with disabilities, and those facing socio-economic challenges.
The programme is designed to fill the gap in representation among producers and meet the growing demand for skilled producers not only in the creative sector but also in areas like health and the environment. As the role of producers expands across various sectors, including those focused on societal and environmental impact, this programme aims to equip participants with the diverse skills needed to excel.
Key dates
- Programme duration: 23 October 2024 to 5 May 2025
- Application deadline: 5 September 2024
- Interviews: late September / early October
