Three graduates from the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering (ACE) have secured top placements to kickstart their careers after graduating from the University of East London.
Camilla Serini, a BA in Graphic Design graduate, has secured a position at YVMV Studios, a creative agency that has worked on campaigns for beauty brands such as Paw Paw, Face Junkie and Eyelure. Sowmiya Paneer Selvam, a graduate of UEL’s MSc in Artificial Intelligence course, has started at Ailaysa Technologies Private Limited, a company which specialises in content creation technology using AI. Ruba Thiruloganathan has started at robotics company KAL-M after completing her MSc in Engineering Management.
We caught up with the graduates to find out how UEL helped them secure these incredible positions.

During her first term, Camilla Serini was advised to apply for an internship at YVMV through the UEL internship scheme by Alicia Hart, Senior Lecturer at UEL. To complete the application, she used the advice she had gained from UEL’s Professional Life modules.
Throughout the internship, Camilla applied her skills and worked hard to make the most of the opportunity. She said, “I diligently applied the skills and knowledge I had acquired. I was enthusiastic about the opportunity, and my eagerness made each day fly by. As a result of my hard work, I was offered a permanent position at the end of the internship, which I was thrilled to accept.”
She has now started as a Junior Graphic Designer at YVMV. She has had a very positive experience so far and said it was an exceptional place to start her career. She said, “I’m fortunate to be doing what I’ve always dreamed of and more. I’ve had the opportunity to assist with branding and editorial projects, as well as content creation and advertising campaign shoots for clients, video, and photo editing.”
Camilla is grateful to have started her career while at UEL and praised the great opportunities available for students. She said, “I found it extremely helpful to start an internship before graduating, as it helped me refine my career expectations. All the career life coaches from UEL have been amazing, always checking on me throughout the internship and celebrating my career achievements.”

Following the completion of a Master’s in Engineering Management, Ruba Thiruloganathan was looking for roles using her networking skills. A key point for her was taking part in a hackathon organised by UEL, TANCAM, and the government of Tamil Nadu. There, she won first place in a competition and was offered the role of Project Engineer at KAL-M Robotics.
She has found the experience so far both exciting and enriching. She has recently collaborated on an interesting project, ‘The Boxing Bots’, a gamified educational kit and course designed to encourage young learners to think about innovative ways of designing robots.
Ruba explained that UEL has provided invaluable support throughout the application process to the everyday tasks of her role. She said, “UEL has prepared me for this role through its practical, hands-on approach to learning. The coursework, combined with opportunities like hackathons and internships, has equipped me with the necessary skills and confidence to excel in a professional setting.”

Sowmiya Paneer Selvam graduated from UEL with an MSc in Artificial intelligence. She also participated in the hackathon organised by UEL, TANCAM and the government of Tamil Nadu where she delivered a presentation that impressed recruiters.
After the presentation, she was selected for an internship at Ailaysa Technologies. Her experience at Ailaysa so far has been fantastic and she feels the company has prepared her well for future challenges in the field of AI. She said, “The best part of my internship has been the opportunity to work on a Text-To-Speech (TTS) application with multilingual support. It has been incredibly rewarding to see how the concepts I studied are applied in real-world projects, especially in the field of AI and generative AI.”
Sowmiya explains that UEL was instrumental in preparing her for the role. She said, “The course modules on machine learning, natural language processing, and big data analysis have been particularly relevant. Additionally, UEL's emphasis on practical, hands-on learning has been incredibly beneficial. These experiences allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to practical problems, which has been directly applicable to my work on the Text-To-Speech (TTS) applications”.
