UEL recognised for advancing race equality

The University of East London (UEL) has been honoured with a prestigious Silver Race Equality Charter Award – only the third institution to have gained the accolade.

The award marks the work UEL has undertaken to create an inclusive and diverse community.

Higher education charity Advance HE, which manages the award, announced that the assessment panel agreed that UEL had met the necessary criteria. The University already held the Bronze award.

The Race Equality Charter helps higher education providers improve the representation, experience, progression and success of racially minoritised staff and students within higher education.

Many congratulations to the University of East London on achieving a Silver Award. The award recognises the University’s commitment, leadership and significant progress in addressing inequality and promoting race equality across the whole institution.

“We look forward to working with the University of East London to share their good practice so that other institutions can consider how this may apply in their contexts.”

UEL achieved the award by completing an in-depth assessment and developing a robust action plan to ensure that race equality is embedded across the institution. The award provides a framework through which universities can work to identify and reflect on barriers experienced by minority ethnic staff and students.
