The University of East London was filled with opulence and allure as students unveiled their innovative creations during an exclusive showcase at London Fashion Week. Held amidst the modern backdrop of the Stratford campus, the event seamlessly merged progressive concepts such as sustainability, gender-neutral fashion and unconventional sartorial artifacts.
The runway spectacle commenced with a captivating entrance by the iconic Hu Bing, an internationally acclaimed model and actor, igniting the atmosphere for an immersive fashion extravaganza.
Remarkably, this marked the University’s second consecutive inclusion in the esteemed London Fashion Week schedule, cementing its reputation as a cutting-edge institution at the forefront of the fashion industry.
Head of fashion, Beatrice Newman, from the School of Arts and Creative Industries said,
“Being part of one of the world’s leading fashion events is testament to the exciting and cutting-edge work being created by its BA Fashion Design students.
“It was so inspiring to see the work of our emerging designers on the runway. They all worked incredibly hard for months to produce collections that will help kick start their careers.
“This really was a unique experience for our students who got to present in front of so many high profile stakeholders including fashion houses, buyers, stylists and press.”
Having worked for months, the designs were informed by personal narratives exploring diaspora, gender identity, sexuality and communities.
Emerging designer and student, Luana Lopes said she was excited and nervous to be showcasing her work. She said: “It’s really exciting to have this opportunity. We have great tutors who are constantly motivating us and our course has helped us gain skills that have prepared us for the real world. I hope to have my own brand in the future.”
Fashion design student, Adryene Kimfuta Mikala, added: “My collection for London Fashion Week was based on traditional dance from my heritage. UEL has given me so many opportunities, especially featuring at London Fashion Week, it's going to help kick-start my career.”
Following the show, students showcased their final designs from a research project with UMBRO CHINA – with the brief set by the General Manager of UMBRO CHINA, Keith Cheng.
