For students studying for a BA in the University of East London’s Sustainable Development and Social Change programme, the prospect of immersing themselves in a foreign culture isn't an idle dream but part of their course.
Final year undergraduates have the option of studying in the global south through the overseas study module, and Grace Thomson, who is a pursuing a BA in International Development with NGO Management jumped at the opportunity to spend time in Brazil.
She spoke to us about her daily life and the locations that act as an inspiration.
A gateway to global learning
Participating in UEL's overseas study module isn't a holiday, of course. Students might be studying in an unfamiliar location, but the focus is on modules that align with their UEL courses.
Under the guidance of her course leader, Dr Susannah Pickering-Saqqa, Grace embarked on an educational journey, one that enabled her to better understand global inequalities and urban contexts.
Embracing the vibrancy of Rio de Janeiro
Grace's destination of choice was the Pontificia Universidade Catolica (PUC) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She enrolled in PUC's course on Inequalities in the Urban Context, taught in English, and also took on the challenge of learning Portuguese.
From February to July 2023, Grace found herself amid the lush tropical nature surrounding PUC's campus and has returned with plenty of memories and a phone full of pictures.
Grace said, "The university, surrounded by tropical nature, was a beautiful environment to study in, and a unique one also. PUC is minutes away from Rio's famous botanical gardens and Tijuca forest. PUC provided great cafeteria food every day for only €R12 (£2) also incredibly lovely and attentive staff who I befriended."
"My beach front cycle route to PUC Rio from neighbouring Copacabana, just 20 minutes along the lane. The Itaú bikes to hire per month were just £4. And PUC have the Itaú bike station just outside the university campus."
"This is a very relaxing hang out spot overlooking bamboo trees and among other Floresta. It was a great shady study spot just outside the Leme Building, I would go here between classes to study or have lunch."
Balancing tuition and exploration
While absorbing the academic insights of her chosen course, Grace also continued her dissertation work. Her research delved into the intricate intersections of sex work, stigma, and intersectionality in the Brazilian context.
And despite being thousands of miles away from her home institution in East London, Grace maintained her connection with her dissertation supervisors, enabling her to get expert guidance when she needed it.
UEL's commitment to global experiences
Grace's journey illustrates the opportunities for personal and academic growth that UEL's overseas study module offers. Her time in Brazil showcases the fusion of rigorous learning, cultural immersion, and self-discovery.
Dr Pickering-Saqqa, from the School of Education and Communities, said, "Engaging in the enriching experience of visiting and learning abroad opens a window to the world's diverse perspectives and knowledge on sustainable development.
"It fosters a profound understanding of global interconnectedness, nurtures adaptability, and cultivates empathy. The journey across borders not only expands intellectual horizons but also enhances personal growth, creating resilient and culturally agile individuals poised to tackle the challenges of our world."
