Two architects from University of East London (UEL) have been listed in the Dezeen Awards 2022.
Alex Scott-Whitby, subject cluster leader for architecture and design was one of only four UK projects shortlisted and Alice D'Andrea, lecturer in architecture was long listed in the Dezeen awards 2022.
Now in its fifth year, the awards are organised by world-leading architecture, interior and design magazine, Dezeen.
They recognise outstanding work across all areas of architecture and design and are judged by an international panel comprised of 93 industry figures.
This year's awards attracted 5,400 entries from 90 countries, which were then longlisted to 300 and subsequently shortlisted down to 54. The awards spread out over 12 different categories covering, landscape, rebirth, urban housing, cultural building, civic spaces and more.
The Gathering Place, by Alice D'Andrea.
Alice D'Andrea was longlisted for the landscape category for her project titled The Gathering Place, a riverside artwork in Inverness, Scotland, which was designed by her architectural practice, KHBT.
The work places a pier-like structure that curves along the bank of the River Ness and allows visitors to walk safely into the flow of the river.
After necessary flood defences were installed in the city, access to the river's edge was further impeded. The project was an opportunity to define a space for citizens and visitors to access and spend time with their river.
Restoring the Jubilee Pool, by Alex Scott-Whitby
Led by Scott Whitby Studio, the project was also nominated in the Architects Journal (AJ) Awards. It is focused on the restoration of Grade II Listed art deco sea lido that suffered all the ravages of the Atlantic Ocean and has been sensitively brought back to its former glory.
It is now the second geothermal-heated swimming pool in the UK - the first being the Romans in Bath.
"I'm incredibly proud to have had my studios project for the restoration and rejuvenation the Jubilee Pool included in the final 54 of the Dezeen Awards 2022," said Alex.
"This represents a great achievement where we have reintroduced an important space back into the local community. It's been a hugely humbling process to be part of that journey with the people of Penzance and I am looking forward to seeing them enjoy the pool.
"We are again up against some phenomenal global competition, but it is especially gratifying to be on this final list alongside other great architects including Thomas Heatherwick, The Last building by Richard Rogers. I am extremely proud of my team - which is currently made of a 100 per cent UEL graduates - and their hard work to deliver this," he continued.
Vote for Alex!
Alex's work is in the final stage of the Dezeen Awards public vote in the architecture rebirth category. The poll is open to the public and votes must be made before midnight UK time on Monday 10 October.
The awards recognise outstanding work across all areas of architecture and design.
The public vote is separate from the main Dezeen Awards programme, where winners are selected by a jury of industry professionals, with winners announced at a live event in London at the end of November.
