Students who secured financial support for their studies through the University of East London's scholarship programmes have come together to celebrate their success.
They received a certificate marking their award at a Scholarship Celebration held at the Pump House on the Docklands Campus, coinciding with the University official welcoming ceremony and Autumn Fair.
The University's vice-chancellor and president, Professor Amanda Broderick, congratulated recipients, saying they should take great pride in the knowledge they had "made their case with passion, and deserve to be among that select group which has received one of the scholarships".
Professor Broderick told the students, "The University of East London is passionate about opening up education to all those who have the opportunity to excel. Our scholarships help truly remarkable students who have shown determination and resilience, sometimes in the face of huge practical difficulties. You have demonstrated the values that the University cherishes and champions.
"As part of Vision 2028, our 10-year strategic plan, we place your student experience and your journey to first-class careers at the heart of our institution. We want to support you and reward you with scholarships that will help you to focus on shaping your futures and creating impact in the communities that we collectively serve."
Grace Thurgood, who received a scholarship to pursue her MA Counselling and Psychotherapy, said, "I'm thrilled to get this scholarship because I genuinely don't know how I would have been able to do the course otherwise. I hope to benefit the University and to build a business around helping the neurodivergent community."
Louise Bowyer, taking a two-year counselling and psychotherapy course, said she wanted to use her education to help older, isolated people. She said, "I was so surprised to get the email to say I had won - I thought there was a glitch and they'd sent the email to everyone who had applied! This sort of thing never happens - it's amazing. It's made it affordable to do the course."
The University gives a range of awards:
- The VC's Scholarship offers a cash award or tuition fee waiver of up to £27,750 for students who reflect a commitment to the University's values.
- The Dean's Scholarship offers a cash award or tuition fee waiver of up to £13,500 aimed at students who demonstrate academic excellence, financial need, and a commitment to the University values.
- The Postgraduate Scholarship offers 50 per cent discount on tuition fees and is designed to inspire progression into postgraduate education.
- The Chevening Scholarship is delivered through the University's partnership with the UK government's Chevening programme which aims to support an international network of students seeking to study PG courses.
Gessie Herilien, a Chevening scholar, said, "This award is very valuable to me. I am so humbled to have been the only one selected from my country - Turks and Caicos Islands - and I carry the Chevening brand with pride.
"So far, my journey with the University has been incredible. I hope to make long-lasting friendships; I hope to network and learn more from people within my field of financial technology and regulation; and I hope that by the end of the year I will graduate with a distinction, and I will be able to move on to my career."
Chevening scholar Fransisca Christanti Tri Wulandari, who is studying positive psychology, said, "The award means a lot to me. I prepared myself for three years before this opportunity to study in the UK.
"I am the first generation to study a Master's degree and so this financial support helped me and my family a lot and gave me confidence to pursue my goals and dreams."
