The University of East London (UEL) hosted Team USA during the London 2012 Olympic Games. Team USA used SportsDock as their training base, and some of their coaches and medical staff stayed in the UEL Docklands campus' halls of residence.
After the Olympics, Team USA, who finished at the top of the gold and overall medal standings, donated their gym equipment and strength and conditioning kit to UEL. For the past ten years it has been used by an estimated 35,000 students, staff and local residents.
As part of the £500,000 refurbishment of the SportsDock gym, new state-of-the-art equipment is being installed to help provide people in East London with access to the very best health, sports and training facilities. Yet the UEL and Team USA London 2012 Olympic legacy will live on, as the University has donated the equipment from 2012 to two local fitness centres, Power Mobile Gym and East London Boxing Academy.
The equipment donated in July 2022 included treadmills, exercise bikes, rowing machines and various Olympic bars and weights.
Power Mobile Gym was founded by UEL alumna, Shannia Gordon. The former social studies student from UEL's School of Education & Communities, became one of the youngest boxing coaches in the country when she started Power Mobile Gym. The centre based in Woolwich, South East London, brings communities together by providing tailored boxing programmes and conducts classes for people of all ages and abilities.
East London Boxing Academy is the other local centre benefiting from the donation and continuation of the Olympic legacy. The boxing centre is within working distance of the University’s Stratford campus and the Olympic Park.
