University of East London (UEL) alumni Jona Efoloko, Adam Gemili and Bianca Williams, current high performance sport scholar Emily Martin, and East London Phoenix star Amy Conroy all enjoyed medal success with Team England at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Between them, they won four medals, including a gold for Jona Efoloko. He ran the anchor leg in the men's 4x100m final and was joined in the squad by Adam Gemili. Bianca Williams took home the silver in the women's 4x100m final, which took place minutes after Jona had helped Team England to gold.
Earlier in the weekend, East London Sports high performance sport scholar Emily Martin, who was making her Commonwealth Games debut, won a bronze medal in the women's 10m synchronised divining competition with Robyn Birch.
Further success had been enjoyed earlier in the Games when East London Phoenix star and three-time Paralympian Amy Conroy won a Bronze medal with the Team England women's 3x3 wheelchair basketball squad.
UEL on the global stage
The four medals meant that if the University of East London had been part of the final medal table, they would have finished 20th out of the 40 countries that medalled.
Jona Efoloko said, "I am loving it more and more.* Second time, second medal." Emily Martin described her Bronze medal as a "Dream come true", Amy Conroy said that she had "Loved every minute" of her Commonwealth Games experience, and Bianca Williams hugged her baby son as she spoke to the media after winning her silver medal saying "Having a baby shouldn't stop you from achieving your goals."
James Kilden, director of sport and physical activity at East London Sport, said, "We are so proud of all of our athletes and we hope that the excellent facilities, infrastructure, talent pathway, and the sports scholarship programme that we have in place at East London Sport have given them a strong platform to help them succeed in their sporting careers."
*Jona Efoloko won a Bronze medal for Team GB as part of the men's 4x100m at the recent World Championships in Oregon.
