Two University of East London students were invited to join the first Team England training camp for 3x3 basketball, the three-a-side version of the sport played on a half court with a single hoop.
Josh Ward-Hibbert, an MSc International Business Management student, and Paige Robinson-Miller, an MSc Sports Management student, both play for their respective London Lions basketball teams. They attended the Team England training camp in the first week of June.
The 3x3 version of basketball debuts at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics and also features at the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
It's such an honour to be picked. I'm looking forward to what's next in store but firstly I'm so grateful to have been selected for the training camp,"
Josh Ward-Hibbert, UEL basketball player and student, said.
Paige added, "The camp itself was fun. There was a range of ages and personalities so there were always moments where I was learning something, but moments where I was able to teach too.
"Learning a different style of play was exciting and being able to balance having to make quick decisions but stay patient was very challenging but definitely an important skill."
The UEL scholars are now looking forward to the next step. Josh hopes to graduate this summer and Paige is returning for another year with further competitions in her sights, "I'm looking forward to the U23 selection, full well knowing England is going to smash it."
