Sustainability Research Institute leads on £10.2m project

World Energy Efficiency Day on March 5 aimed to raise awareness about the importance of rational energy use and the reduction of waste.
In keeping with the quest for sustainable energy use, the University of East London lead on a £10.2million programme that helps organisations in the Eastern counties to lower their carbon impacts to support a zero-carbon economy.
The Eastern New Energy (ENE) project is a three-year regional support programme focusing on recognising and overcoming barriers to decarbonisation with the delivery of practical solutions and the creation of innovation clusters to generate new ideas.
On World Energy Efficiency Day, it's particularly important to highlight the many and varied ways we and our project partners are supporting moves to greener, more sustainable operations in our daily lives. We are, for example, helping organisations to reduce their carbon emissions and become more energy efficient by carrying out energy efficiency reviews and providing grants for a range of technologies, such as upgrading lighting to more energy efficient LEDs in warehouses, or the installation of photovoltaics."
Professor Darryl Newport, UEL Sustainability Research Institute director and project leader, said.
Other ideas included a hackathon with the aim of generating ideas and concepts for technological solutions using data to promote decarbonisation; and support for the development of zero carbon affordable homes and the refurbishment of existing homes.
The ENE project is also seeking access to data such as home energy performance information, vehicle and transport information, geospatial information and the output of smart meters to enable organisations to lower carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency.
Professor Newport said, "We are providing a range of Research and Development expertise, as well as business development support to help SMEs to become more energy efficient or develop services or products that promote decarbonisation."
The ENE project has received funding from the England European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020. It covers the counties of Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Rutland and parts of Lincolnshire and Essex.
